Participants

Open to any choir with minimum of 25 singers and maximum 40 singers for each category without any age limitation. Singers must be amateurs, and not allowed to perform in two or more different choirs. Member of Parahyangan Catholic University Choir is restricted to participate as a singer in this competition with the exception as a conductor or an accompanist.

Choir has to participate in both categories A and B

    • Classic
    • Art song
  2. Category B: Folksong

Category A

Classic

Choir has to participate in Category B, and should perform a chosen program of three a cappella works in minimum SATB voices division in following order. Total duration should be between ten and fifteen minutes, choir whose program does not comply within the limit will incur a time penalty.

1. Renaissance and Baroque

A polyphony composition from Renaissance or Baroque era. Composition composed by non Asia composer.

2. Romantic Germany and Austria

A polyphony composition from German or Austrian Romantic era.

3. Asian 20th and 21st century Composition

A work composed after 1975 by Asian composer.

Art Song

Choir has to perform a freely chosen program of two or three a cappella works with distinguishing characteristic from previous works performed on classic category in minimum SATB voices division. Total duration should be between ten and fifteen minutes, choir whose program does not comply within the limit will incur a time penalty.

Category B: Folklore

Choir has to participate in Category A, and should perform three works from choir’s origin country or region in minimum three mixed voices division except for authentic folksong in following manner. Total duration should be between ten and fifteen minutes, choir whose program does not comply within the limit will incur a time penalty. (National costume will be appreciated.)

1. Authentic Folksong

A freely chosen authentic folk song without any arrangement (might be performed in unison) with or without choreography. Additional traditional instrument accompaniment is allowed.

2. Origin Folksong

A freely chosen folk song arrangement performed in a cappella, with or without choreography.

3. Folklore choreographic

A freely chosen folk song arrangement performed with choreography with or without traditional instrument accompaniment.

Additional Notes

Choirs must prepare their own musical scores, and the committee is not responsible for the copyright and other legal matters of the works performed in the competition.

Prizes will be awarded by an international jury of experts, whose decisions are beyond dispute.

Selection Procedure

Each choir is required to submit:

  1. A completed application form
  2. A short brief of the choir and conductor activities and achievements in English (preferably in soft and hard copy)
  3. A recent audio recording of the choir (CD/cassette) within the last past year
  4. A completed application and all supporting materials should be received no later than 31 January 2009, and addressed to:

Preliminary selection

Only application enclosing all the requirements details as above will be considered. Choirs are selected based on submitted audio recording materials.

An artistic board led by Budi Utomo Prabowo will select 10 qualified choirs to participate in the competition. Each of selected choir will be contacted by committee, and will receive further detailed information in a guide book by May 2009.

Entry Fee

The entry fee for Parahyangan International Chamber Choir Competition 2009 is IDR 2,000,000 or USD 220, with detail as below:

  • The registration fee: IDR 500,000 or USD 60
  • Competition fee: IDR 1,500,000 or USD 160

A copy of payment receipts should be sent together with other application requirements materials. The choirs who are not selected will get their competition fee refund in amount of IDR 1,500,000 or USD 160. Please provide choirs’ bank detail along with others submitted application materials.

General Conditions of Participants

Travel expenses

Travel to and from Bandung will be at choirs’ own expense.

Accommodation
  • Free lodging will be offered by the organizers for 25 persons at maximum from Wednesday, July 29 until Sunday, August 2, 2009
  • Participants will be accommodated in hotels, guest houses and private rooms, with the single room only for conductor.
  • Extension of your stay in Bandung will be possible at your own expense.
Meals

Free meals (lunch & dinner) will be provided by the organizers from Wednesday, July 29 (dinner) until Sunday, August 2, 2009 (breakfast)

Transportation

The organizer will provide a bus transportation for each of participant during the competition in Bandung.

Interpreter

It is recommended that your choir accompanied by an English-speaking person.
